The door to the interrogation room opened and Special Agent Cullings walked in.

Sasha lifted her forehead from the table. “What did the doctor say? How is the child?”

Eric stopped with one hand out and tugged the chair away from the table.

“Well?” The kid had been drugged. By the time she got to him, by first outrunning the other two men barreling toward her, she’d been unable to rouse him. She and Alex subdued the two men, and the place had flooded with police and FBI.

Now she was here. In handcuffs.

Eric sat down before answering, “He was injected with something, but they seemed to know what it was. Last I heard, he’ll be fine.”

Sasha let go of all the tension in a long breath. “That’s good. Not being able to wake him was…scary.”

“You have medical training?”

“Some field training, like for trauma care. I learned from a friend who was in the military. For a while, years ago, I thought I was going to be a nurse so I’ve taken some night classes.” She glanced at the bland wall beside the big glass window she couldn’t see through. “Didn’t work out, though.”

He studied her. The head of the task force that had been hunting her for weeks now. Ever since she’d shown up in Last Chance to help her friend Bridget and their boss Millie, and to catch the betrayer colleague who’d tried to kill them both—Clarke. That was when she’d landed on their radar. Eric had been shot when Clarke came for Millie. Now he was the arresting agent.

“What am I being charged with?”

He leaned back in the chair. “We’re working on that. Judges around here like to take their time, you know?”

She didn’t, but he likely wasn’t after a response. And she was going to work to keep any conversation limited. If she mentioned anything specific, and it wasn’t on his radar, she would only end up tipping her hand, and he would have even more ammunition against her. Right now, she had no idea what this was about.

And how could she? Sasha had lived so many lives. Been so many places. A lot of what she’d done was classified. He probably didn’t know about that stuff. And more recently, she’d done good things. She’d even saved Alex’s life just hours ago. How could the charges stem from a recent crime? She didn’t think she’d done anything in the past few years to warrant an entire federal task force.

That left the past. The timespan before she started working for the government. Who knew what on earth they were thinking? Or if she would even live to see any kind of trial. It had happened to Clarke, though she knew that was Dorian. Shot on the courthouse steps minutes before his arraignment.

People like her didn’t live long once they popped up in the system. A name entered triggered a search result. After that, it was only a matter of time before she would be cut down in the hall in some prison, or killed in a riot.
